A blast of humid August
Fills my Kia rental car
As I drive through leafy Westchester County
Where I grew up

Past Mamaroneck marina
Where Mom would take us three kids
To admire the sailboats.

We’d camp out
Windows open, hatch down
On an Indian blanket
In the way back of
Her Dodge station wagon
With fake wood paneling

The smell of McDonald’s burgers
Mingling with low tide and sultry breeze
As we absent-mindedly
Munch our fries and slurp our milkshakes.

An hour’s staycation of peace and magic.
